  • Why use ShelfRelief instead of eBay/Amazon or the bookstore?

  • How do I send a book to a Buyer?

    Once your book has been bought, you will have access to the buyer's information through the "Books Sold" tab in your account. You will need to contact him/her and schedule a time and place to meet to exchange the book. Remember that he or she will also receive your information and will need to confirm the delivery in order for you to get your money.

  • How quickly should the book be delivered?

    Preferably within one business day, but we give a timeframe of 3 business days as flexibility to the convenience of the sellers. If the buyer doesn't receive the book in a timely manner, he can contact us to get a full refund. The seller will have to cover the corresponding transaction costs (due to credit card processing).

  • What happens if I get the wrong edition of a book?

    Email us and we will give you a full reimbursement. The seller of the book will have to cover the transaction costs.

  • Why should I trust ShelfRelief?

    We can verify each student's identity by their University email address. Unlike Amazon or eBay, we have the power to verify the validity and identity of our sellers. In our Terms & Conditions, users agree to act in accordance to the law and are responsible for any fraud. Additionally, our site is secured with SSL Encryption, which ensures that all the data is safe and secure.

  • Do I need to pay to use ShelfRelief?

    Nope—it's free! There is no cost to sign up or post books for sale. We will only take a transaction cut when a book sells. Amazon charges 15% + $2.35 to sell books through their website. We charge 12% + $1.25 for regular users and 10% + $1.00 for premium members.

  • What if my book isn't delivered?

    When the seller confirms delivery, you will get a delivery-confirmation email. If you haven't received your book at that point, email us to receive a reimbursement.

  • What if I won't be able to deliver the book I sold?

    You must let us know so we can issue a reimbursement to the buyer. Because we work mainly on the reliability of our sellers, any transacion cancelation will result in a deduction of 1 star in your seller rating. If you cancel a transaction, you will need to cover the transaction costs as well.

  • What if I mistakenly bought a book I don't need?

    You have two options. 1) You can re-post the book immediately and try to sell it to someone else. 2) You can cover the transaction costs and get your reimbursement in ShelfRelief credits. Unfortunately we get charged by Paypal for every transaction that is processed, so we can't offer a full reimbursement.

  • Why should I rate the Seller?

    Every buyer will have the possibility to rate the seller after their transaction has been completed. This will enforce accountability by helping buyers to distinguish reliable sellers. Highly rated sellers have the advantage of being more trusted and might benefit from more sales.

  • Why is there a ShelfRelief "Book Budget"?

    This is solely to make it easier and faster for you to buy books. When you have money in your Book Budget, you don't need to use PayPal for the transaction.

  • How do I get money in my ShelfRelief book budget?

    Currently, the only way to have money in your book budget is by selling books. We are working on letting people upload money in advance for an even more convenient service in the future.

  • How do I get the money in my PayPal account?

    After you have delivered and confirmed delivery of all the books you sold, you can click on "Transfer Funds." It will take us 2 weeks to send your money to your University email through PayPal. If you have any other PayPal account, you'll be able to transfer the funds to your desired account for free. Please remember to deliver all the books before cashing out. If we are forced to cancel your cashout due to failed delivery we will have to charge you the transaction cancelation fee. This is out of our control since PayPal is the service we use to handle all of our money transactions.

  • How do I get the money in my bank account?

    Once you have your money in PayPal, you can easily transfer it to your bank account by entering your information.

  • What if I can't find the book I am looking for?

    If you want to buy or sell a book that is not listed on our database, you can post it manually. If you found the book listing but no one is selling that book, you can request it. We will try to find students who own the book you need, and we will let you know when the book is posted.

  • Can I preorder books for the following semester?

    Yes. If a book is posted for sale, you can buy it whenever you want. If you buy a book at the end of the semester or during a break, expect it to be delivered during the first 3 days of classes the following semester.

  • What is the best search criteria to use?

    Title, or department and course number. Many books often come out with new editions and change their ISBN numbers. We let students post different editions for a book but we don't alter the ISBN number. Many professors and courses let students use old editions to save money.

  • How should I rate the condition of my book?

    Like New: I took care of my book; little or no highlighting and no folded pages. It looks almost new.

    Very Good: I used it but it looks very good. There is some highlighting and marks and a couple folded pages. The cover is in good shape.

    Good: There is highlighting and folded pages, but the book is in good condition. All pages are in place. The cover looks fine.

    Acceptable: There are stains and lots of highlighting, the cover looks old but the book is still usable.
